Immortal Fest 2026 brings you exciting news with it’s first ever Derek Jan Guitar clinic.

Derek Jan Ferwerda has traveled all over the world, instructing and inspiring musicians of all levels for over 4 decades. His resume includes working with artists such as Eddie Money, Cher, Cyndi Lauper, Depeche Mode, Hall and Oates, The Spin Doctors, Rick Springfield, Robert Palmer, and Novella.

While most clinic pros give you tips and tricks on how to improve your technique and tone, Derek is unique in his approach. He will invite you to explore, create, rethink, and recalibrate yourself both as a single musician, and as a collective musical entity with others, regardless of where you are in your music journey. So whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro, you will benefit from this experience.

Be sure to catch Derek playing live performing classic Novella songs with Furious Love on Friday September 11th. After the Novella set, Derek will perform christian hard classics alongside Furious Love for the rest of their set.

A letter from Derek to Immortal Fest fans:

Hello seminar friends!

At 64 years old, I have been involved in, surrounded by and privy to more music and music styles both individually and collectively than I ever dreamed possible. Growing up in Puerto Rico with friend and neighbor, Jose Feliciano, and Tito Puente (whose son was my best friend at the time), was an amazing early experience. At 19 years old, I was appointed as the guitar chair for the Apollo theater for six years from 1980 to 1986, and co-authored the only jingle to run two consecutive Super Bowls for 60 second spots. I was also lucky enough to record on “Take me Home tonight” by Eddie Money, and perform with Marvin Gaye, Cyndi Lauper, Cher, the Spin Doctors, and talented Christian artists like Novella. And wouldn’t you know it, I even toured with the Village People (ask me about it after the clinic lol).

So what will I offer you?? I will encourage you in musicality, instrumentation, arranging, writing and being part of a collective musical experience with other musicians. I will make it hands-on and technical, so bring your guitars and something modest to play out of and even your pedalboards if it is an issue for you, or bring something you want to learn to negotiate in the system of playing. And of course I will answer all your questions!

I am also excited to announce that special guest Adam Gibson, one of my favorite all-time drummers, someone I consider a brother, and band mate for many years in Novella, will be joining us. This is one of the best single musical relationships I have ever had and you will have the benefit of hearing and knowing why. Want to hear how we came up with songs and parts for them?
